Photography For Teachers

Photography For Teachers

TEC-998 –  Three 900-Level Semester Units

This course takes students to the next level in their digital photography.  It’s difficult to purchase a digital camera nowadays that does not have the capacity to take incredible images.  However, most users have their cameras set to “Auto” and ask why they can’t take better photos!  This course takes students to the next level of digital photography.

During this class, we will familiarize the student with the equipment they already own and introduce them to any optional equipment they may want to own.  We’ll them cover what their camera is capable of doing with all of its available settings, from macro to landscape photography, in natural, low and flash lighting.

Weaved throughout the course, students will discover what is possible after the shutter is clicked.  Our primary focus on image post-processing will be using LightZone, a free open-source digital photo editing program that runs on Windows, OSX and Linux.  Free is good as your students can use LightZone at home, but if you already have a favorite photo-editing program that you use, it’s fine if you use that instead.

Students will explore the technical aspects of digital imaging, as well as the educational values and applications in the classroom. They will become familiar with advanced digital imaging skills by watching video screencast demonstrations created by the instructor and completing structured assignments, as well as open-ended assignments and projects.  A vast assortment of web resources and videos will enrich each assignment.  The recommended textbook will be a valuable tool for work during the course and a fantastic resource to help students advance their skills long after this course is completed.

Students will also have the option to adapt many of the assignments for use in their own classroom.  Forum discussions throughout the course will allow the students to share their successes and classroom uses of digital photography.
